Sorrowful Mysteries
Tuesday & Friday
The Passion and death of Christ. From the Garden to Calvary, these five mysteries trace the cost of love when it refuses to turn back. Prayed especially on Fridays and throughout Lent.
First Mystery: The Agony in the Garden
He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; he said, 'Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.' Mark 14:32-42
Jesus is afraid. He asks his closest friends to stay awake with him, and they fall asleep. He asks his Father to find another way, and the answer is silence. This is the loneliest scene in the Gospels. And yet he does not leave. The prayer is not 'I feel ready.' The prayer is 'Not my will but yours.' Faithfulness is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to stay.
Fruit: Sorrow for sin
Second Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. John 19:1
One sentence in John's Gospel. The brutality is understated because no words can carry it. The body of God, beaten by the hands he made. This mystery asks us to sit with suffering we cannot explain away. There is no lesson that makes this tolerable. There is only the recognition that he bore it, and that every person who suffers unjustly has a companion who went first.
Fruit: Purity
Third Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns
The soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak, and they came to him and said, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' And they struck him repeatedly. John 19:2-3
They mock what they do not understand. The crown is real. The kingship is real. But it looks nothing like power as the world measures it. Every throne built on violence and contempt is a parody of this moment. The true king wears thorns. His authority comes not from force but from willingness to suffer for those who reject him.
Fruit: Courage
Fourth Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross
And carrying the cross himself, he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. John 19:17
He carries the instrument of his own death through the streets of the city that welcomed him days ago. Simon of Cyrene is conscripted to help, not because he volunteers, but because the soldiers force him. Veronica steps forward with a cloth. The women of Jerusalem weep. Along the via dolorosa, small acts of compassion appear in the midst of state violence. They always do.
Fruit: Patience
Fifth Mystery: The Crucifixion
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.' Luke 23:33-46
From the cross, Jesus forgives. He promises paradise to a thief. He gives his mother to John, and John to his mother. He thirsts. He cries out in abandonment. He hands over his spirit. Every word from the cross is a gift. The world worships control; the Crucified reveals trust. Love taken to its absolute limit does not retaliate. It gives itself away.
Fruit: Perseverance
Sign of the Cross

Apostles' Creed
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
Our Father
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Glory Be
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
Fatima Prayer
save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to heaven,
especially those most in need of Thy mercy.
Amen.
Hail, Holy Queen
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.
Closing Prayer
by His life, death and resurrection,
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life;
grant, we beseech Thee,
that by meditating upon these mysteries
of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain,
and obtain what they promise,
through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.
